Detention of Ladakhi Padyatris

Déjà-vu?: Silencing People's Peaceful Protest Against Colonialism

Increasingly in today's India we are seeing attempts by the ruling elite to silence peaceful, non-violent resistance to destructive development and authoritarian rule from New Delhi. The arrest of the padayatris from Ladakh, who had walked hundreds of kilometres to bring their demands for Constitutional autonomy so that Ladakhis can determine their own future based on their fragile ecological and cultural base, is as unacceptable as was the British colonial government's action against Gandhi and others when they were simply demanding their right to salt as a basic need. This form of sub-colonialism by the Indian govt is atrocious.

Instead of opening a receptive dialogue with the Ladakh marchers and their supporters from all across the Himalayas and the nation, the union government chose to act in a dictatorial manner by imposing prohibitory orders across Delhi and illegally detain the peaceful climate marchers.

✊🏾 Vikalp Sangam and all the supporters of this democratic movement demand immediate release of all marchers, withdrawal of prohibitory orders and opening up of a genuinely sensitive dialogue with the Ladakh climate marchers.
