Vikalp Kathas are stories of hope, courage, and imagination. They document the journeys of communities, collectives, individuals, and organisations who are walking paths that are rooted in justice, care, and sustainability. Each katha (story) showcases an ‘alternative’ — a real, lived possibility of doing things differently, often in response to ecological, social, political, or economic challenges. These stories remind us that change is not only possible, it is already underway.
What do we mean by ‘Alternatives’?
‘Alternatives’ refer to ways of meeting human needs and aspirations such as food, water, shelter, health, education, dignity, and meaning, without destroying the Earth or excluding large sections of humanity. They include grassroots initiatives for basic needs, localised economies, direct forms of democracy, ecological practices, movements for justice and equity, community-driven governance, and knowledge systems that challenge extractive and exploitative models. Alternatives are built by people from villages, neighbourhoods, institutions, and networks who believe in co-creating more just, compassionate, and resilient futures.
