Grounded Imaginaries

THC Team

Highlighting the transformative models of three Western Himalayan communities—Pishu in Ladakh, and Sarmoli and Kewar in Uttarakhand—the Grounded Imaginaries project showcases how regenerative farming, sustainable energy practices, and localized adaptation efforts are driving meaningful change. By gathering and sharing these grounded stories of resilience and learning, the project seeks to inspire and empower other communities to shape their futures and contribute to a more sustainable planet.

The Grounded Imaginaries project seeks to collect stories of community resilience in the face of wide-spread climate change with the objective of disseminating these lessons widely to other vulnerable communities through amplification, capacity building and storytelling.

This pilot project took place in 8 sites across 2 countries, Australia and India. These 8 sites were chosen as ‘cases’ because each site individually offered the opportunity to work in communities already facing climate-related systems breakdown while cumulatively showcasing a diversity of contexts to learn from (social, economic, political, cultural, geographical and ecological).

This project was also designed to benefit from collaboration between three partners with different but complementary expertise, experiences, skills, orientations and networks: an academic institution, the Sydney Environment Institute (SEI), an applied research organisation, India and Bharat Together (IABT) and a community-based organisation, Social Entrepreneurship Association (SEA).

In addition, the emphasis on youth and the inclusion of a youth fellowship program was specifically designed to ensure that the benefits of the project had a life beyond the formal involvement of the partners.

Please see the detailed compendium below to learn more about the stories from the Himalayan sites!
